Dinner Last Night

24 January, 2007

So, last night we decide to try a different mode of transportation here in Kiev.  We have used the buses everyday, we have mastered the Subway System here (there are only 3 different lines), we have taken a few taxis...The other day when we were doing all the shopping for the orphanage, we were waiting for a bus and Deanna tells Olga that we saw other Trolley's when we were down in Podil....Olga informs us that those are the same ones...The line starts in Podil and turns around right here and goes back down...So...Last night we got on the trolley and went down to Podil to find a Mexican food restaurant called The Tequila House that we had heard about.  We found it no problem as we had already been by it once before when we walked along the Dnipro River...

We sit down....Order some chips and salsa....some guacamole, some rice, some refried beans and a couple chimichanga's....

The chips and salsa arrive....Small portions but they were good....The rest of the meal then arrives and it all looks pretty good....Wait a minute...The refried beans look...well...a little odd...

Here is the Ukrainian version of refried beans....First, take a portion of cooked black beans....strain well...Put in a frying pan and fry them up...When all is said and done....You have Re-fried beans...

I tried smashing them up to get a consistency I was more familiar with...BUT, they were so dry I was unable to smash them down into a nice goowie slop of refried beans...  We were rolling on the floor laughing when we saw this...I wish I would have taken a picture of these beans....It is one of the funniest things we have seen on the trip so far...and I think, I will never forget the Tequila House...thanks to their very creative interpretation of "Refried" beans!

Talk to you all soon!
